Should Tess trust Angel?

As of right now I don’t see any reason why Tess shouldn’t trust Angel. He seems to respect her, which is more than you can say for Alec. I feel that Angel proved to Tess that she can trust him right after “He jumped up from his seat and…went quickly towards the desire of his eyes, and kneeling down beside her, clasped her in his arms,”(120). He was tempted to kiss her, but he stopped and asked for forgiveness because he did not ask and told her that he did not feel it was his right to treat her that way. If he would have kissed her Angel would have been acting in the same manner as Alec, however, the way he acted her showed Tess that he is a better man. I think that he is trustworthy.

  2. Tess should trust Angel due to the fact that he has been nothing but sweet to her. He got to know her first by talking with her. Once he was sure of their chemistry and his love for her, that is when he made his move on Tess. He is not force, and is understanding. Angel likes Tess for who she is. I agree with Marybeth that he seems to be trustworthy this far. Especially because he did not pull anything like Alec did.

  3. I would agree that when Tess first met Angel she had every reason to trust him. Now that it has gotten to the point of their marriage I am not so sure. He did tell her the truth about his two day affair with a complete stranger, so that does make him honest, but when he was upset with her because she was a rape victim, which she could not help, that might have lowered it down a bit. He was quick to accept her forgiveness of him, saying that she most certainly should have forgiven him, but he is not as quick to forgive her for a sin she was not responsible for. As of right now I would not trust him if I were her.

  5. At first I believed that Tess should trust Angel. He loved her, but did not mistreat her like Alec did. Angel loved Tess, and even wished to marry her. Angel did try to persuade Tess to marry him, but he didn't do anything inappropriate like Alec. I also thought is was good that Angel was honest with Tess about his relationship with another woman, but I have now begun to dislike him because he does not forgive Tess when she tells him about her relationship with Alec, even though she forgave him for his affair with another woman. I do not like this because Angel chose to have an affair with another woman and Tess still forgave him, but Tess was forced into an affair but Angel still did not forgive her. That makes me trust Angel less because it does not show he is a caring, understanding person.

That make me not trust angel as much because it reveals that he is a caring, understanding person.

  7. (This was done before reading phase 5) For now, Tess should trust Angel because he is a cultured, civilized, and respectable intellectual of pious upbringing and above all, his love for Tess transcends mere physical infatuation and consists of loving her for her intellect, spirit, will, and essence. Angel never once attempts to take advantage of Tess, rather, he fills the role of the quintessential gentleman adoring Tess in all she does. Sadly, and to my disappointment, I view Angel in a different light upon the reading of phase 5.

Tess should not trust Angel at all. He bailed on her after her confession and made her feel worse about herself instead of pulling her up and supporting her. If he really loved and cared for her, Angel would have comforted Tess and tried to help her overcome her sorrow and guilt that was caused by Alec and the rape. Now, Angel is off in Brazil by himself, and has left Tess to fend for herself and be alone. This should not be the actions of a newlywed, or for any other person who is in a relationship. I think Tess should be wary of Angel and be mad at the way he has treated her. Angel kept a secret about the 48 hour stranger, too. He should be understanding, because he also has sinned. Angels actions when the times got rough were wrong and prove he is not trustworthy.

  10. Prior to phase the fifth, Tess had every reason to find Angel to be trustworthy. He took her feelings into consideration, cared not of her social status but the person she was, and treated her with respect.

Once the truth of her past is revealed though, everything takes a huge turn for the worst. Angel becomes human. But from Tess' point of view, Angel acting as if the entire scandal with Alec is somehow her fault...should send some type of warning to her. If he can't even accept a sin that was pushed upon Tess against her will, why should she try to bestow her trust in him? Since she is willing to overlook his run with the trollop, he should just as easily be able to see past the mistakes of Tess' past (whether they be done by her or not).

Also, him abandoning her and leaving for Brazil only shows the mental instability he possesses. This action of his only shows that he is a coward and flees when times may start to get slightly complicated. Such a quality could potentially sabotage their marriage in later years anyways. It may be for the best that Angel had revealed just what his desires were at such a young stage of the marriage...at least now Tess has a chance at something better.

I do not believe that Tess should trust Angel at this point in the novel. Although, up until her confession, Angel has treated Tess with respect, he bailed on her at a crucial point of their relationship. As Brooke said, Angel should have supported Tess after her confession instead of making her feel worse about the rape. Then, to make matters worse Angel runs off to Brazil. This proves how unreliable and delinquent Angel really is. How can Tess put her trust into a grown man when he resorts to running away to a different country instead of facing his problems? Although Angel seemed like the ideal man for Tess at the beginning, his reaction to Tess’s confession, fleeing to Brazil, and inconsideration for Tess’s feelings prove him to be untrustworthy.

  12. Tess should not trust Angel. When Tess finally had the courage to tell Angel about the rape, he freaked out. She had finally trusted someone, the trust was destroyed. At this point, Tess is on her own. She is the only person that she can trust. She tried trusting Angel, and that didn't work out. But who knows. Maybe by the end of the book, she'll find someone she can trust. But I doubt it.

I agree with both Blucher and Kelly Lackey. We all know that Tess has had a lot of issues with dealing with her own past, let alone coming clean about it to Angel. As soon as she finds the courage to speak and get everything off her chest, Angel freaks out. He begins to question his marriage, and how he views Tess now. He is then so quick to decide that he will deal with this problem by fleeing to Brazil. How reliable is Angel when he doesnt face his problems, but runs away from them? Tess should also not trust Angel because he his a hippocrit. The night of their wedding, Angel decides to confess to Tess of his various sexual encounters in hopes of not lossing Tess and being completly honest. Tess immidietly forgives him and they are both happy. But, when Tess confesses of her past he basically shuns her and will not forgive her. Thus, Angel is not trustworthy.

  14. I think Tess can still trust Angel. I don't see Angel doing any physical harm to Tess, therefore I think she can tell him whatever she wants. He has not betrayed her. He just cannot accept her past, he hasn't turned on her or anything. I think that she should be a little more cautious in what she tells him though. He will probably have a hard time accepting other things if he can't accept this thing; something they both have in common. Overall, I think Tess can still trust Angel.

  15. Angel has given Tess no reason for her not to trust him. His reaction to her news was not what she had been hoping for, however he did not show any signs of doing anything irrational to himself or her. Tess was the one contemplating suicide, and breaking down. One could make the argument that Angel may be planning on doing something to Alec, or that a future interaction with the two is in store however, this would still not qualify as a reason for Tess not to trust Angel. If anything Angel doing something to Alec would be good for Tess, and show some payback for the pain he has caused her in her lifetime. When faced with the choice to take Izz to Brazil or leave alone he made the right choice to leave alone. Although Tess does not know of this I think deep down Angel still loves her and is still worthy of her trust.

Tess should not trust Angel at all. Even the narrator thinks so. As soon as Angel lets loose his secret, he goes from 'Angel' to 'Clare.' I think that means that the narrator and the reader have now been exposed to the 'dark' Angel. Not only this, but also Angel could not seem to understand or have the capability to 'forgive' something that was not even Tess's fault, yet he expects her to forgive him for the sin he committed purposefully. No one forced him to engage in that 48 hour session, he did it himself. Tess should get over him and move on. He is not trustworthy.

  17. I believe that Angel cannot be trusted. His actions towards Tess' confession really prove a lack of good character in him. At this point, it is hard to know if Angel really loved Tess in the first place. He did make it clear previously that he did, but now he is so quick to leave Tess and run off with Izz that poor Tess shouldn't trust him anymore. It's a shame really, since Tess believed that Angel was really the one for her. Even in the beginning of phase the fifth, Angel confesses that Tess is not the woman he really loved. All in all, Angel should not and cannot be trusted by Tess.

I agree that as of right now Tess has no reason not to trust Angel. He has not rushed or pushed Tess into anything. He has gone on walks with her, talking and getting to know her. However, although Angel has gotten to know Tess, Tess has not been entirely truthful. I think that Tess' past with Alec with cloud her judgement about Angel. Because of what Tess went through with Alec she will not see the goodness in Angel and that will hinder their relationship.

  19. Honestly, even though Angel ditched Tess after her confession, I don't think that makes him untrustworthy. He loved her and he defended her when his family was unsure about Tess. Angel worked very hard to get Tess to love him and he was always sweet to her. Tess was the one that lied to him. Can anyone really blame him for being upset after finding out that his wife had lied about her virginity? Obviously she didn't lose her virginity by choice, but Angel was allowed to be upset. Now that he has chosen to run off to Brazil and he has left her without a decent amount of money I could say that she shouldn't trust him. But up until he left her with nothing, I could still argue that he was an all-around trustworthy guy.

  20. Tess should not trust Angel at all. She was hurt by Alec and now the same thing that happened with Alec is going to happen with Angel. When she confessed what happened to her Angel walked away. he said that he could handle it, but if he walks away there is no way he can. This only foreshadows that Angel is going to leave her. The point of marriage is to stay with your spouse and this is how it should be. Now Angel is off in Brazil and it doesn't look like he is coming back. If she was smart she would stop seeing and Angel and not trust him.

  21. Before reading Phase 5, I saw no reason why Tess shouldn't trust Angel. Now that I have read beyond that, I completely agree with many of my peers in that Angel is very untrustworthy. The fact that Tess, being as weak of a character as she is, had the strength to forgive Angel of his affair completely astounds me. But what is even more astonishing is that Angel could find no other alternative to dealing with Tess's news than 'running away' to Brazil. His immaturity shines through in this portion of the novel. How can someone be trusted when they aren't even mature enough to deal with their own issues? How do they have the audacity to ask for forgiveness but not reciprocate it? [like my use of an erotema mrs. brown? :)] The answer is, they can't. Trust and respect go hand-in-hand and if Angel cannot respect Tess, Tess cannot trust Angel.

  22. Seeing as how hindsight is 20/20, I would say now that Tess should have never trusted Angel but prior to phase the fifth, she had every reason to trust Angel. He was (at the time) the first real male in her life that wasn't a screw up or scum. He was kind, sweet, good looking, caring, and most of all, she loved him and he loved her. Thus, her trust in completely rational. And tragically it was the trust in him that showed the true character of Angel, that he would abandon her when he learned of her taint. In that action, all of the good, all of the romance, all of it was erased and Angel became the hypocrite that left her after she revealed the truth. It is perhaps saddest that Angel revealed his true nature right after Tess completely opened her heart to him, asking him to forgive her, and love her despite of what happened and I fear the effects of such an action on Tess could cause horrible, horrible consequences, no matter how unintended Angel wanted them to be.

  23. I believe that Tess should not trust Angel. The actions that Angel committed in the fifth phase are almost as equally extreme as the raping of Tess. At the time affairs were heavily frowned upon by society, even more so than today. Angel did not reveal that he was involved in an affair until after their marriage, making him a liar just like Tess. I’m not saying that Tess is a liar in a bad way, and I am not criticizing her for keeping her past a secret, but not revealing vital information creates a lack in trust. Tess and Angel are equally to blame for the lack of trust in their relationship, and I believe it would be very challenging to get past that. Angel taking Izz to Brazil is even more hypocritical, as he continues to take similar actions that anger him. Tess was raped. Not by choice or by will, but by the selfishness of another individual. She could not control the situation in which she was placed, and if Angel cannot realize that the rape was not Tess’ fault, they will never be the same. Tess is naively forgiving Angel for every and any decision he made, and this is a mistake as he will never forgive her.

  24. Contrary to what the reader originally perceives, Angel Clare demonstrates qualities that deem him to be untrustworthy during Phase Five. After Tess confesses, it is difficult for him to forgive her, and he is unsure as to whether he will ever be able to love her again. However, just moments prior he freely confesses his love for her; this causes the reader to speculate as to whether he truly loved her or just loved the idea of her. Any decent, caring, trustworthy husband would show support and comfort to their new wife. Angel shows neither. Instead, he concludes that it is most appropriate to flee to Brazil, leaving his new wife alone to live with her guilt and regret. Angel also is portrayed as somewhat of a hypocrite during this eventful phase. After he makes the confession about his forty-eight hour encounter with a complete stranger he freely accepts Tess' forgiveness and sees no reason as to why their marriage cannot continue as planned. However, when Tess tells for her previous encounter with Alec, during which she was taken advantage of, Angel is far from accepting and causes Tess to feel even worse about it. This shows that Tess may have been wrong in believin gin his love for her. Instead of being portrayed as a nice, loving, trustworthy husband, Angel's qualities shift to untrustworthy, immature, and selfish.
